Where Nature Thrives

Balingup community moves on from the basics

Since the Balingup Small Farm Field Day began in 1991, run by a dedicated committee and local volunteers, it has showcased many aspects of small farming. This has included caring for the land and animals, growing trees and food, cooking with fresh local ingredients and creating fashion and crafts with natural products.

Moving ahead, after a cancellation due to COVID-19 in 2020, holding a smaller event in 2021 on the village green, then cancelling again in 2022, the Small Farm Field Day held the event back on the Town Oval in 2023. This was popular and well attended with more promises from others to come back in 2024.

2024 is running with the theme – Where Nature Thrives – and will showcase many features of small farming and living in a local community. There will be talks, demonstrations, commercial and market stalls, as well as a Kids’ Corner, music, wine, spirits, and cider tasting, pet zoo, livestock and heaps of food and coffee choices. Plus, we are bringing the scarecrow competition back after successfully running this last year.

2024 will also offer visits to different farms over the weekend of 6/7 April showcasing different local skills, talent, and ingenuity.

The Balingup Small Farm Field Day committee of 2024 has a considerable amount of local experience and knowledge - they recognise that there are many people who have moved to the area recently, and together with the expertise of locals with the speakers, demonstrators and exhibitors visiting for the day, there is much to be shared for all.

This all helps building a positive, resilient community, with sustainable land management/farming practices, ultimately caring for the land and living a good life in rural communities.

Something for everyone
